In a statement released on Thursday, Agriculture Victoria said that a commercial duck farm recently tested positive for the high pathogenicity H7N3 strain.

The farm is located within the current restricted area in the Golden Plains Shire, where movement restrictions are already in place.

As per the governmental agency, all ducks at the property would be humanely disposed of under strict supervision and in accordance with related policies, while the site would also be cleaned and cleared of the infection.

As the duck farm produces commercial eggs and meat, Agriculture Victoria assured the public that the products do not pose a risk and are safe to consume.

The state's Chief Veterinary Officer Graeme Cooke said that this detection is not unexpected given the proximity of this property to an existing infected premises (IPs).

"We have established restricted and control areas in proximity to existing IPs which has assisted us in limiting the spread and quickly detecting the sixth IP through comprehensive surveillance activities," Cooke said.

In late May, the outbreak of avian influenza was initially confirmed at an egg farm near Meredith, a town situated about 90 km west of Melbourne.
